Gone with the Wind is a novel by the American writer Margaret Mitchell (1900–1949), written in 1936. In the first volume, the main character of the novel, Scarlett O'Hara, the daughter of a rich planter from Georgia-after a cloudless childhood and youth-faces difficult life challenges. Trials and poverty during the American Civil War harden her character.
