War doesn't knock on your door asking if it can come in, it's not warning you what will happen to your life, your family the life of your community, your village or town or your country. It won't tell you what your future will look like. It knocks everything out; it takes everything away from you w ithout warning, and it gives in return one thing - a chance for you to fight back.

Ukrainians chose to fight back. Starting February 24th, 2022, millions of people in Ukraine have resisted the invasion of their country by Russia. Some streamed towards new front lines that stretched hundreds of kilometers on sea, land, and air, and some have chosen to dedicate their skills, whatever they might be, to help the country resist.

This is a book about the personal sacrifice of people who chose to resist this brutal and barbaric invasion, happening in Europe in the 21st century as the whole World keeps watching. This is a series about godless sainthood.

SAINTS is a photo book by Sasha Maslov, in which he documents the stories of people during Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine in 2022-2023. Maslov talks about a new understanding of holiness and self-sacrifice that has been transformed over the course of 10 years of war.
The publication contains more than 100 photos and stories of people who serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, volunteer and do their job every day to protect the state. Many of the heroes and heroines of these stories have died or are missing, so the photo book plays a symbolic role - it honors the lives lost and those saved.
The Canadian-Ukrainian company Saint Javelin and the independent Ukrainian publishing house ist publishing were involved in the creation of the photo book.

“This book is about the personal sacrifice of people who decided to resist the brutal and barbaric invasion that is taking place in Europe in the 21st century in front of the whole world,” says Sasha Maslov.

“After the full-scale invasion, our publishing house carefully reviewed its publishing program, focusing on books that record and help Ukrainian and international audiences analyze today's events. The SAINTS photo book by Sasha Maslov is exactly that. Collecting over 100 images and stories, Sasha Maslov and Nastia Stanko speak of the courage, sacrifice, and unrelenting determination of the people who play and have played an important role in the Russian-Ukrainian war, capturing the essence of holiness in the midst of struggle. Published in collaboration with Saint Javelin, this photobook honors those who have died while celebrating the resilience of those who are living through the tragic events right now,” Anastasia Leonova, co-founder of ist publishing.

“Saint Javelin was known for memes and jokes, but we wanted to create a more serious, documentary project to tell the stories of people who are defending Ukraine. When Sasha Maslov approached us with his concept for a photo book, we immediately realized that it was an exceptional idea and did not hesitate to say yes,” says Christian Boris, founder of Saint Javelin.

30% of the net proceeds from the sale of the book on the Saint Javelin website will be used to purchase tactical medical equipment for the Ukrainian Armed Forces under the initiative of the Ukrainian World Congress Unite with Ukraine.

Sasha Maslov is a Ukrainian photographer who shoots for The New York Times, New York Magazine, Wall Street Journal Magazine, author of the photo books Ukrainian Railroad Ladies (2020, Basics), Veterans: Faces of World War II (2017, Princeton Architectural Press) and Portrait Assignment (self-published).
