Carmilla

Carmilla (1872) is a Gothic novel by the Irish writer Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu.

Laura lives in a secluded castle with her father, a wealthy widower. They are expecting guests—a general with his niece. But she suddenly dies, and instead another guest—Carmilla—unexpectedly appears in the castle. After her arrival, Laura is haunted by nightmares, in which a monster in the form of a cat bites her. Laura's health deteriorates. She learns that the general's niece suffered from the same mysterious illness. The general is sure that a vampire visited both of them at night...
