North and South is a novel by an English writer Elizabeth Gaskell.
It is a social novel about the life difficulties of the industrial North of England in the nineteenth century, written on behalf of the lady from the South. Margaret Hale is a daughter of an Anglican priest who decided to leave his post and move to an industrial town, Milton. The quick change of residence depresses Margaret, but she manages to find friends among ordinary workers and even comes into conflict with their factory owner, John Thornton who is her father's friend and student.
