The final year of World War II in western Europe saw the world's largest amphibious operation at D-Day, the largest airborne operation for its time at Arnhem and proved with Hitler's offensive in the Ardennes that victory was not going to be easily won. Also in that year, the French Resistance fought openly against their German occupiers, more than 15,000 French civilians were killed by Allied bombing, and the scale of the concentration camps was discovered.

The Downfall of The Third Reich is a military history of the Western Campaign from D-Day in June 1944 to the fall of Berlin in May 1945. It covers all the battles and campaigns, including Villers-Bocage, Operation'Market Garden' and Operation Dragoon/Anvil, where the Allies landed in southern France in August 1944. It also features sidebars on the major commanders, such as Rommel, Montgomery, MacArthur and Eisenhower.
