The textbook contains basic data on all nuclear medicine sections: fundamentals of radiation physics and radiation–matter interactions, mechanisms of biologic effects of radiation from primary ionization and atomic excitation to clinical manifestations at the tissue and organism levels, pathophysiology and clinical presentation of local and total irradiation of man, stochastic effects of low-dose irradiation and peculiarities of radiation injuries in internal irradiation by incorporated radionuclides. Special attention is paid to provision of safe application of radiation in medicine, where population receives the major portion of all anthropogenic irradiation. For the first time the concept of safety culture is introduced in radiation medicine, which concerns the main role of human psychology both in safe use of all benefits given by radiation and in occurrence of nuclear incidents of different scale and socio-economic and medical consequences.
