David Herbert Lawrence (1885–1930) in the semi-auto-biographical novel Sons and Lovers (1913) touched on the topic of ambiguous relationships with parents. The main character of the novel, Paul Morel, has a suffocating relationship with his mother, who gives him all her love after the death of her husband and eldest son. This prevents him from building his own life and creates emotional conflicts with his mistresses.
