Down and Out in Paris and London

Down and Out in Paris and London is an autobiographical novel by the British writer George Orwell (1903–1950), his first major work, signed under the pseudonym George Orwell. After graduation, Orwell left England for its eastern colonies, where he served in the police force, but soon retired. He lived in London, then in Paris, where he lived poor, earned money by washing dishes, gained experience and impressions that would later fill his novels and essays. The author wanted to draw society's attention to the poverty that exists in wealthy cities.
